What happened last week in Premier League?

Before we get into Matchweek 9, let’s review what happened last weekend in the Premier League. Manchester City’s perfect record came to an end, as Unai Emery’s Aston Villa defeated the Citizens 2-1 at Villa Park. This gave Arsenal the perfect chance to pounce and go level on points with City, which they accomplished with a 2-0 victory over Everton. The two heavyweights now sit at 21 points apiece at the top of the table. Below them, 4th-place Liverpool defeated 3rd-place Brighton 2-0 at Anfield, closing the gap between the two clubs to one point. Chelsea dropped to 5th after a 2-0 defeat against Tottenham in the London Derby last weekend, where Cole Palmer was sent off. That now means back-to-back wins for Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs. Further down the table, Manchester United continued their struggles with a 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford. The pressure is starting to mount for Michael Carrick as the Red Devils sit one point clear of the relegation zone.

Enzo Fernandez of Manchester City celebrates his goal during the Premier League 2026/27 match between Manchester City

Manchester City vs. Brighton (Saturday, 11 a.m. ET)

It’s 1st place against 3rd in one of the best matchups of the week. Both sides are fresh off losses from last weekend and will be looking to bounce back. City have scored goals for fun at the Etihad this season and Erling Haaland will look to continue his strong start to the season. Enzo Maresca’s men haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last five matches in all competitions and their defense will need to be at their best against a Brighton attack that has proven to be lethal.

Hull City vs. Ipswich Town (Saturday, 11 a.m. ET)

Two of the newly promoted sides face off in a big match for both clubs. Hull and Ipswich have had impressive starts to the season, sitting in 10th and 12th place, respectively, and level on 10 points each from their first eight matches. The Tigers have not lost a match at home in the Premier League so far this season and have proven to be a tough team to face at the MKM Stadium.

Bournemouth vs. Leeds (Saturday, 11 a.m. ET)

After somewhat struggling to start the season, Bournemouth has five wins in their last five matches in all competitions. In that span, the Cherries have scored 14 goals and conceded none, including impressive wins against Manchester United at Old Trafford, and most recently, knocking out Aston Villa of the EFL Cup. Leeds will be a difficult test for Bournemouth as Daniel Farke’s men have only lost one Premier League match this season.

Coventry City vs. Sunderland (Saturday, 11 a.m. ET)

Although it’s still quite early in the season, this match could have important implications on the relegation battle. Coventry currently sits in 19th, one point above last-place Sunderland. A win for either side could be a crucial three points and both managers will be eager to get out of the relegation zone as soon as possible.

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Crystal Palace (Saturday, 1:30 p.m. ET)

After a difficult start to the season, Tottenham is unbeaten in their last three matches in the Premier League, including back-to-back wins, most notably a statement 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last weekend. Spurs will look to keep the good times rolling when they welcome Crystal Palace to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. Palace are on a two-game losing streak in the Premier League, which they’ll hope to end when visiting their London rivals.

Aston Villa vs. Fulham (Saturday, 4 p.m. ET)

Aston Villa is unbeaten in their last four Premier League matches after failing to record a win in their first four matches to start the year. The Villans just defeated league-leaders Manchester City 2-1 last weekend and have been starting to find their form with the integrations of Nicolas Jackson and Johan Manzambi into the starting 11. They’ll face a Fulham side that may be starting to find some form of their own with two wins in their last two Premier League matches.

Liverpool vs. Arsenal (Sunday, 11:30 a.m. ET)

Peacock’s match of the week features two heavyweights battling it out at one of the Premier League’s most iconic stadiums. Liverpool is unbeaten in their last five matches in all competitions and has jumped into 4th place in the Premier League table. They’ll welcome the reigning champions Arsenal, who are also on a run of good form. Something’s got to give in a match that will have important implications on the title race.

Premier League players to watch in Matchweek 9

Declan Rice (Arsenal)

Liverpool boasts one of the best midfields in the league, so if Arsenal hopes to take something from this game, Declan Rice will need to be at his best. Rice has been superb yet again this season and is arguably one of the Gunners most valuable players. If he can win the midfield battle on Sunday, Arsenal will be able to control the game at Anfield.

Micky van de Ven & Jan Paul van Hecke (Tottenham Hotspur)

Spurs impressively kept a clean sheet against high-scoring Chelsea last weekend, and their Dutch center-back partnership was a large part of that. Van de Ven and van Hecke are two of the best center-backs in the Premier League; if their partnership can continue to flourish, Spurs will be a tough team to score against going forward. They’ll be eager to claim back-to-back clean sheets and develop some defensive consistency.

Zion Suzuki (Aston Villa)

After the departure of long-time goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez this summer, Aston Villa was in dire need of a replacement ahead of the new season. Off the back of an impressive World Cup, Zion Suzuki became that replacement for Unai Emery, and he has looked sharp in his transition to the Premier League. He’ll be eager to keep another clean sheet this weekend at home against Fulham.
